I was whatsapping with a friend just now on MRT, and he just got onto the bus and prepares to have a good sleep throughout the bus journey while heading to work. It give me some motivations to dig out my old posts about sleep on another blog to put it here, hopefully it helps you in your sleep too. Here you go:
1. Read a boring book
Take out your thickest user manual for any electrical product in your house or any boring book that you won’t even consider touching it during normal time and read it now. The idea here is to bore your mind until certain extent that it surrender and want to go to sleep. Don’t start reading your work or school stuff (although these stuff might be bored to you too) which might be stimulate your mind and keep you awake.
2. Think about boring thing
If you are too tired to get to your boring book, use your most powerful tool to help you get back to sleep, your mind. You might have heard about the most old fashion way to sleep, counting sheep. The same idea applies here, you focus your thought on some boring and repetitive stuff/process (it needs not be counting sheep, just make sure it is repetitive), before long your brain will lose interest and you will be on your way back to your dreamland.
3. Eat something light
If you wake up in the middle of the night out of hunger, take something light like a small cup of warm milk, banana, or a small bowl of cereal will do. Try not to cook instant noodle if there is no ready-made food in your kitchen, although I know it is hard. That is to say, keep some light and healthy food around in your kitchen for emergency like this.
4. Room temperature
If your room temperature is too hot, lower the temperature on the air con or turn on another fan to cool yourself down. If it is too cold, cover yourself with blanket.
5. Light music
Switch on some light music if it helps you, remembers to set an auto switch off. Avoid TV as it actually keeps you awake, the mind stimulate program is not helping here. At least fall sleep while watching TV does not sound like a sleeping plan to me.
6. Light level
Make sure the light in your room is not too bright and not too dark. Total darkness and brightness might disrupt your sleep pattern. But do your own testing, some people sleep better in total darkness as well
7. Noise level
This is kind of a given, make sure the noise level is at the lowest when you are going to sleep again. That meant fall sleep while you are watching TV is not recommended here.
