How to stay alert on 2 hours of sleep per day?

I was researching for my initial topic “How many hours of sleep do you needs?” when I read about the idea of polyphasic sleep pattern. In contrast to our normal sleep pattern, this idea actually suggests a separation of our daily sleeping hour into few parts throughout the day.

Many people had tried to adopt this sleep pattern, which reduce sleeping hour to only 2 hours and maintain a high alert level. I haven’t tried any of these sleeping patterns personally since my schedule is not flexible enough to accommodate the requirement in these sleep schedule. I thought I just put it here for some of you who might have flexible schedule and like to try out a new way of sleep.

I written a summary of few polyphasic sleep pattern I found:

1. Uberman Schedule

This schedule suggests that we take six naps of 20-25 minutes every 4 hours throughout the day, which add up to 2-2.5 hours of sleep per day. For example, you might choose to sleep 20 minutes each at 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm and 2am.
Two key points to remember here are:
– You never ever OVERSLEEP in this schedule
– You never ever MISS the napping hour

The idea of this schedule is that a normal human being is getting about 1.5 hours of REM sleep over the course of 8 hours sleep, so essentially we need only 1.5 – 2 hours of deep sleep to stay alert.

You can go to here if you want to see some experiment done on this sleep pattern.

2. Dymaxion Schedule

This schedule suggests that we take 4 naps of 30 minutes every 6 hours throughout the day, which add up to 2 hours of sleep per day too.

3. Everyman Schedule

This schedule has a slightly different theory. It introduces the idea of “core sleep” + few naps throughout the day. “Core sleep” means you will sleep for few hour first (usually is during the early morning), after that you take a nap of 20-30minutes whenever you feel tired during the course of one day. For example, 3 hours of sleep plus 3 naps is one of the Everyman schedule.

You can go to here if you want to see some experiment done on this sleep pattern.

Side effect: Whichever polyphasic sleep schedule you choose, meant you will be living a different schedule with most of the people around you (I bet you won’t find many friend who sleep every 4 hours or every 6 hours in Singapore)

Note: It takes some time before you can adapt to polyphasic sleep pattern and there is no medical research to support polyphasic sleep yet.
